About Advocacy Services
SEMCIL provides individual and systems advocacy. Individual advocates
work one-on-one to assist consumers learn how to advocate for themselves;
help consumers make informed choices about services and keep consumers
informed of their rights under federal, state and local laws, and assist
individuals to obtain support services. Systems advocacy includes developing
and implementing public policy, and working with government officials,
organizations and businesses to make changes in the community to improve
the lives of persons with disabilities.
Program Goals
- To promote and advocate for the civil rights of persons with disabilities.
- To provide resources to support advocacy on behalf of persons with disabilities.
- To educate the community about inclusion of persons with disabilities.
- To impact policies that affect persons with disabilities.
Examples of what Advocates can assist consumers with:
- Completing Social Security applications.
- Understanding their employment rights and responsibilities.
- Developing a Plan to Achieve Self Support (PASS).
- Understanding and applying for Medicare and Medical Assistance.
- Locating transportation options.
- Understanding individual rights under the Americans with Disabilities
