This course is specifically designed to meet the needs of young people with disabilities who want or need information about sexuality. Discussion and information regarding topics such as: definition of sexuality, reproduction, contraception, STDs and values and attitudes towards sex in families and society. Other topics include sexual responsibility, health care, communication in relationships, dating, how alcohol and drugs can affect decision making and fostering relationships. This class is being offered to young people with a disability, ages 16 to 24. Class will be divided by gender during certain sections of the workshop to allow for comfort of students and gender appropriate topics. Participants under the age of 18 or those with a legal guardian will need parent/guardian approval in order to participate in this class.

This class will assist students to learn about and practice how to ride the city bus. Students will participate in one session of instruction relating to bus safety, etiquette, reading the bus schedule, how to transfer from one bus to another, and more. Students will then ride the city bus to the galleria downtown and ride back to SEMCIL. Students who would like or need further instruction will be offered the opportunity to arrange such instruction at the end of the course.

Requirements: Transition-age youth (16-24) with a disability. Each student MUST bring $4.00 for the bus. SEMCIL WILL NOT provide bus fare. Students will not be able to participate in the bus ride without bus fare.

This will explore the world of work including workplace social skills and
provide participants with the tools to obtain a job. This course will allow young people
to discuss and learn about rules and expectations in the workplace.
The course will include:

  • The creation of a data sheet, cover letter and resume
  • Practice with interviewing skills, including appropriate body language, and
    answering interview questions appropriately.
  • How to make follow-up calls
  • Writing thank you letters
  • Discussion on workplace culture, social skills and workplace dynamics.

Students will be given instruction and practice in hygiene, conflict management, acceptance of feedback, hidden workplace culture, gossip, use of technology, basic do’s and don’ts in the work environment, communication and other necessary skills needed to obtain and maintain employment.
